2001 USAPL Jr. Nationals in Review
by Erik Steiner

The 2001 USAPL Teenage/Junior Men’s National Championships were held on June 23-24, at the Lincolnwood Radisson Hotel, in Chicago.

Day 1 included the 114-181 classes.  Micah Kiletico looked great winning the 123’s and Clay Grubbs excelled in the 148’s.  Both of these young men attend Louisiana Tech, and will be representing the U.S. at this year’s IPF Junior Worlds in Bulgaria.  165 lbs. collegiate champ Brad Robbins decided to give it a go at 181, setting up a showdown with Oklahoma’s Noah Divine.  The two traded the lead through the deadlifts, with Robbins pulling the win on his third attempt.

Sunday’s lifting began with the 198’s.  2000 IPF Junior World Bronze Medalist Nick Tylutki ruled the class and cruised to an easy win.  He will be competing against a very impressive collegiate national champ in Jason Beck from Slippery Rock University at this year’s IPF Junior Worlds in Sofia, Bulgaria.  Defending IPF 220lbs. junior world champion P.J. Chovanec posted a huge 1855lbs. total at the Collegiate Nationals, and no one showed up in Chicago to challenge it.

Eight men came to lay claim to the 242lbs. National Title.  Pennsylvania’s Erik Steiner led after the squats, with 688.  Shane Newark from Ohio was second with 672.  Tony Arterburn, from Fort Bragg, N.C., was third with 617.  Newark hit a 473lbs. bench and Arterburn used a huge 501lbs. bench to take 1st and 2nd, respectively, going into the deadlifts.  Steiner ended the bench in 3rd , after making 407lbs. and being called for uneven extension with 429lbs.  Newark fell off the pace in the deadlift and finished the meet in 3rd.  It was only Shane’s 2nd meet, and he’s only been seriously training for less than a year.  Expect BIG numbers out of him in the future!!  Arterburn successfully pulled 622 on his second attempt, followed by Steiner’s 650 to take the lead.  Arterburn then managed 633 on his third to retake the lead.  Steiner called for 661 for the win.  He pulled the bar to within an inch of lockout, but ran out of gas and the bar crashed back to the platform.  Arterburn-1752lbs., Steiner-1747lbs. in a great contest.

Louisiana Tech’s Emilio Saldiero lifted very well and took control of the 275’s.  Finally, came the Superheavyweights, and Brian Siders of West Virginia.  Siders OPENED with an IPF Junior World Record in the bench press and SMOKED it!!  He went on to rebrake his own record, and decimate the SHW class.

The contest was very well run, as Dennis and Sandy Brady events usually are.  The U.S. looks to be sending a very strong team over to Bulgaria for the IPF Junior Worlds.
