Jason Beck our brother of Iron

As Nationals nears and the debates begin of who is going to take what class at Nationals. I am reminded that one of our brother’s in the PA Iron Game, that will be missed at this years Nationals. Jason Beck, a dominate force in the Junior and Collegiate level the last few years, with a 1800+ total in the 198, will not make the trip to South Dakota this year because he is proudly serving our country with the 4th Infantry Division in Iraq.

Jason in last years Nationals had a performance that was noticeably different then his collegiate performances. Many probably assumed it was the first Open National jitters or something like that, when actually Jason spent the previous weeks serving his military duties, running miles everyday and training very little if at all. Even then, before being called to active duty, his loyalty and priorities were set on being a soldier. He could have taken a pass at Men's Nationals, since he knew his performance would not be his best. But speaking with Jason in September at a USAPL event, there was no regret. He spoke of watching some of the best lifters in the game and commenting on all the little things they did.

Jason the captain and creator of the Slippery Rock PL Team has been giving back to the sport. In the last three years he has started a Collegiate PL Team from the ground up. He has meet directed a USAPL BP event. While winning Collegiate National titles and breaking National and American USAPL records. He did this while finishing his collegiate degree in education.

He is a true student of the sport and I expect when Jason returns from Iraq he will pick-up where he left off. So to all those lifters who are having the opportunity to lift in this years Nationals, remember our brothers and sisters of Iron that are defending our freedom.

Our prayers go out to Jason and everybody else serving our country.
